This guide covers how we specify a network for a site of 10–50 users. It’s the document we work from internally, published so clients can see the reasoning.
Step 1 — Count what connects
Not users. Devices. A 20-person office typically has 20 laptops, 20 phones on WiFi, 8 desk phones, 6 printers, 12 cameras and a handful of IoT devices. That’s 66 endpoints, not 20.
Step 2 — Size the uplink
Office work, email, SaaS
3–5 Mbps per concurrent user
Video calls
+4 Mbps per simultaneous call
Cloud backup
Size to complete inside the backup window
Remote camera viewing
+2–4 Mbps per stream viewed
Upload matters more than you think
Cameras, backups and video calls are all upload-heavy. An asymmetric line that looks fast on a speed test can still choke on real usage.
Step 3 — Plan the VLANs
