Where AI actually pays for itself in a small business

AD admin 14 July 2026 1 min read 44 views Updated 2 Aug 2026

We get asked to “add AI” more often than we get asked to solve a specific problem. The projects that work are always the second kind.

The test we apply

A task is worth automating when it is:

  • High volume — happens dozens of times a day, not weekly
  • Repetitive — the same shape every time
  • Rules-light — judgement is needed, but not deep expertise
  • Measurable — you can time the manual version today
  • Tolerant of review — a human can check the output
When we say no

If the volume is low, the rules change monthly, or an error is unrecoverable, automation costs more than it saves. We’d rather tell you that before you spend.

What tends to work

Document intake

Invoices and delivery receipts read automatically, with a human approving anything below a confidence threshold.

Internal Q&A

Staff ask questions in plain language against your own manuals and policies.

Vision on existing cameras

Counting, detection and zone alerts from feeds you already have.

Demand forecasting

Stock and staffing predictions from your own history.

The VLAN table is useful — is there a version of this for larger sites? We’re at about 40 devices and growing.
